The SKS carbine, abbreviated for Samozaryadny Karabin Simonova (Self-loading Carbine of the Simonov system), was designed by Sergei Gavrilovich Simonov in 1943 as a semi-automatic alternative to bolt-action rifles for the Soviet military. It quickly became a standard issue rifle for Soviet and Warsaw Pact troops during the Cold War, but was eventually replaced by the AK-47 in the 1950s. Known for its reliability and durability, the SKS continues to hold historical and cultural significance as a military surplus firearm.
